Breakers

SKaGeN shows its brightest side in this performance: a burning issue - the refugee crisis and our compassion - in an intense demonstration of actorly skill, a poetic experiment, a visual gem. Clara van den Broek plays both the man and the woman, with a child in the background: a patient witness to the tangled world of adults.

A woman and a man have their life well in hand: a beautiful house in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea, time for themselves and each other, a peaceful, quiet and harmonious life to the rhythm of the seasons. But one day, there are stranded refugees on the beach. First some adults, then also a child. While the husband does everything he can to continue his life undisturbed, the wife becomes increasingly affected. She wants him to leave. She despises his indifference. He no longer tolerates her gaze.

She stays. He runs away. She tries to connect, though she sometimes has questionable ways of doing so. He drives day and night, as far away from the coast and his past as possible. He fears the creature that is "storming our shores" will spread across the land.

During their confusing, lonely journey, might they find a fragile seed for a new beginning after all?

Breakers is based on Paul Verrept's book of the same name and was created as a diptych: The Flood and The Run. The Flood was created in 2017 and has since toured Flanders and Avignon. The Run premiered in 2021. Breakers has been touring since April 2022 and tells the whole story.
